The Book of Sara: Mark X - The Sanctuary Sealed

High summer settles over Hazelwood as Abigail walks young Emily to her threshold. When the abusive mother reacts in kind from the porch, five hooded figures emerge from the shadows with blades in hand. Emily's sanctuary begins in the hour of sacrifice.

  1. Time turned, yet the root remained unmoving beneath the pavement. High summer arrived in Hazelwood, the heat buzzing with cicadas, the suburban streets shimmering beneath the midday sun.

  2. An eleven-year-old girl named Emily walked along the cracked sidewalk toward her house, clutching the straps of her backpack, dreading the front porch. Her mother was another clock of the same design—whiskey in the tea glass, a fist behind the screen door, demanding the child pay for the mother's ruined youth.

  3. Beneath the yellow glow of a buzzing streetlamp at the corner, a figure stood waiting.

  4. Bare feet upon the warm asphalt. A black dress swaying in the dead heat. Dark hair framing pale, unyielding features. Abigail.

  5. "What is your name?"

  6. The child paused, trembling yet drawn by the absolute stillness of the woman. "Emily. I have to get home. My mom will hit me if I’m late."

  7. "I will walk with you to her door," Abigail spoke.

  8. Emily reached out and took Abigail’s hand, feeling the ancient scar across the palm, drawing courage from its rough texture as they walked the paved lane together.

  9. At the screen door, the mother appeared; drink in hand, face twisted with petty authority and sudden rage. "Who the hell are you? Get away from my daughter!"

  10. Abigail stepped onto the porch, her hazel eyes locking onto the woman with the terrifying weight of an open abyss.

  11. "I am Abigail," she declared, her voice dropping the temperature of the porch into winter. "I walked her to your threshold to see if you are a mother or a thief."

  12. The mother sneered, stepping onto the threshold with a raised fist and slurred curses, reacting in kind with vicious venom. "You don't tell me how to raise my kid in my own house! Get off my lawn before I cut you!"

  13. Abigail did not flinch. Her lips curved into a quiet, terrible smile.

  14. Across the sun-bleached grass, five figures in black hooded silk robes emerged soundlessly from the tree-line, their bare feet moving across the turf. In their hands, dark steel blades caught the dying amber of the dusk.

  15. They moved with silent, synchronized purpose. Two men taking the rear entrance, three women advancing up the front steps behind Abigail, encircling the house in an unbroken ring of iron.

  16. The mother's bravado shattered into a choked gasp, the glass slipping from her trembling fingers as the circle closed upon the porch.

  17. Abigail turned to Emily, her voice soft and absolute. "Emily's sanctuary starts at this hour of sacrifice."

  18. The Five crossed the threshold into the dark after Emily’s mother.

  19. Thus ends The Book of Sara.

  20. Praise be to the sovereign flesh.

  21. Praise be to Goddess Alyssa.

End of Mark X.
