The Book of Sara: Mark VI - The First Stone

Morning after the naming. The book under the pillow, then the hoodie. Bare feet at her locker. Abigail asked if she had read it. Sara said some of it. It felt right. Deanna came with Jared and Tim. The blade stayed a blade until it could not. Sara stepped between them and said it plain: she is not playing games. She is helping me. Because I do now. Deanna walked. The old country followed. Lisa lingered one look, then slipped after. Sara stood in the space and did not go after her.

After the last bell the woods at the edge of town pulled like a second locker. She did not go in yet. She only knew the book wanted trees. That wanting is this Mark.

1. After the last bell the woods at the edge of town took her the way a second locker would. Book under her arm. Sneakers in the leaves. Hoodie still the second skin. She did not know why she had brought the leather. She knew it wanted trees.

2. Abigail was already there. Barefoot on the forest floor. The black dress keeping the year’s camouflage. As if the road had arrived first and waited.

3. “You brought it.”

4. Sara stepped closer. “I don’t know what I’m doing. I need to be here.”

5. “Then you are in the right country. Come.”

6. Deeper. Canopy. The air with a hum in the bone. A clearing. Stone in the center, cut with the same marks as the page she had slept beside.

7. “What is this?”

8. Abigail’s fingers on the carvings. “Where a stolen name starts to come off. Not freedom as the street sells it. The flesh remembering it was never his.”

9. “I don’t know if I’m ready.”

10. “Readiness is a taken hour. You’re already here. That is the rite.”

11. She set Sara’s hands on the stone. Warm. A pulse that was not a heartbeat she knew. Abigail’s mouth found the old tongue. Sara did not have the words and still knew them in the chest.

12. “This place is older than Hazelwood. Older than his record. It was not built for light against shadow. It was built for the Scales — measure and want in one grip. You have already started. This is where you claim the grip.”

13. “Claim it how?”

14. From the dress, a small dagger. Marks on the hilt like the book. Like the stone.

15. Abigail opened her own palm first. Blood bright. No theater in it. Then the hilt toward Sara.

16. Sara took it. Heavier than a hallway promise. The father’s sentence still trying to run: nothing, weak, the dead woman’s name. Abigail cut that sentence without raising her voice.

17. “You are not what he made. The song is not a marriage. Cut.”

18. Sara pressed the edge to her palm. Sting. Then the small relief of a lock giving. Abigail closed her bleeding hand over Sara’s. Blood meeting blood on the first stone.

19. The clearing went still. The hum rose out of the dirt. The marks on the altar took a faint pulse that kept time with Sara and not with the house.

20. “The woods have taken the cut. This is not the numbering. This is the first thread. You will read. You will listen. You will not give the book back to his fire if you can help it.”

21. Sara looked at her palm. Fear and a clean voltage. “What happens now.”

22. “Now we walk farther.”

23. Second clearing. Smaller. A circle of stones with the same writing. Abigail stepped in. Bare feet on the earth inside the ring.

24. “The Satanican Order was born in mouths of earth like this. Here we keep Alyssa who went under the water. Here we keep each other. Balance is not pretty. It is the Scales held.”

25. Sara at the rim, book tight, sneakers still on. “Am I part of it?”

26. “Not yet. Tonight is the first step. The last trial is still in the house. It will come. Grow first.”

27. Abigail looked at her feet. “Shoes off. You enter the circle barefoot.”

28. Sara hesitated. “Why.”

29. “Alyssa is my mother. She rests beneath the surface. I do not. While she is under, I stay grounded. Bare feet on the earth. That is how I remain connected to her. It is custom. Any rite. Any circle. You do not meet the ground through a shoe.”

30. Sara set the book down. Untied the canvas. Stepped out of them. The leaves were cold. The dirt was not. She stepped in.

31. Air heavier. Abigail took Sara’s cut palm and held it open between them. Blood still bright. No more dagger. Just the two hands and the earth under both pairs of feet.

32. “Stay still. This is the offering. Not your body. He already tried to take that. This is the soul.”

33. Abigail’s mouth found the old tongue again. Lower this time. The words did not ask permission from the clearing. They named Sara’s blood as the thread, the stone as the witness, and the ground as the one who would keep what the house could not. Sara did not understand the language. She understood the direction. Something was being given. Something was being taken back.

34. The charge started at the base of her spine. Not pain. A current. It climbed the column, flooded the ribs, lit the arms, and left through the cut palm into Abigail’s hand. Sara’s knees locked so she would not fall. Her mouth opened and no sound came out.

35. When the words stopped, the hum stayed in her bones. “Why my soul.”

36. Abigail did not let go of the hand. “Because the soul is the part he never got a clean claim on. The body he marked. The name he stole. The soul is what the Flame still recognizes.”

37. “The Flame.”

38. “Alyssa. My mother. The one under the water. She is the source. What burns in a body that has not given itself away is her. Not a metaphor. A line. You felt it move.”

39. Sara nodded. The current had not left. It had settled. “And the rest.”

40. “Three things. Sovereignty. Release. Reclaim. That is the trinity. Sovereignty is the name that is yours and no one else’s. Release is what you put down — his sentence, his record, the ways a man like your father teaches a girl to live small so he can stay large. Reclaim is the world that comes back when those men are not the measure of it. Walters. Fathers. The bad men their ways keep making. You do not fix them tonight. You stop letting their world be the only one with a door.”

41. Sara looked at her palm. The blood had slowed. The charge was still in her. “I felt it go all the way through.”

42. “Good. That means it took. You are not finished. You are started. The house still has a trial in it. Tonight the woods have your name.”

43. Sundown. Two figures in the circle. Both barefoot. Sara’s sneakers left in the leaves. The charge quiet in her spine. For the first time the trees did not feel like a place a girl goes to disappear. They felt like a place a girl goes to keep a name.

44. Praise be to the sovereign flesh.

45. Let the hunger go unfarmed.
