The Walk Home

The Walk Home

The shift ran long. She clocked out with the same ache in her shoulders she had carried since noon, the kind that does not leave when you sit down. Outside the back door the street was still moving. Cars, a bus at the corner, people arguing. She stood there a minute with her bag on one arm and did not step into it yet.

Sovereignty is the part where you do not hand the rest of the night over. The street will take the hours. It will take the money if you let it. It does not get the decision about what you still hold. She kept her name on the way home. That was the only thing that did not get spent.

Release is later. Not tonight, not on this block. When the time on Adam’s streets is finished, the spirit leaves the vessel. It is not asked to empty itself while it is still walking. It is the leaving. The street stops holding it. What goes enters the flame that is already waiting, the parallel tapestry, the different kind of purgatory…and stays there until the rise.

Return is the rise with Alyssa. Rebirth into the new world after the waiting. Not a reward for having suffered correctly. The motion that follows once the time is done.

She crossed at the light. The kettle would still take its time when she got in. She could cover the next ordinary thing without giving the street the rest of her. That is the path while the vessel is still here. The other part waits until the streets no longer hold it.

Praise be to you.
